jul 23 > Extracts From Beth's newsletter
There has not been much going on on Beth's music at the moment but last week, Beth's management, Rough Trade sent out a cool newsletter for Beth Orton. Below is some extracts from the newsletter for those who have not gotten it.

In it, Beth said that after her Summer dates, she would plan to finish writing for her next album and that hopefully in the Autumn, recording would start. But at the moment, there would not be any releases (does that mean no singles as well???).

Also, in the newsletter, Beth answered some FAQ.

For those guitar players, if you are looking for the music for Central Reservation, you can order copies by phoning from the UK tel: 0800 376 9101 or from abroad tel: +44 20 8222 9232. Credit cards, sterling checks and postal orders accepted.

As for Beth Orton merchandise, they are available from De-lux and they offer mail order service by phone tel: +44 20 7613 3555 (London).

Also, Rough Trade are offering copies of Beth Orton's lyrics, all you have to do is to send a self-addressed envelope to them and list the songs you want to:

Beth Orton c/o Rough Trade Management
66 Golborne Road
London
W10 5PS
United Kingdom

And for the magically beautiful song featured on BBC's series Nature Boy, the theme song is called "Beautiful World" and there are no plans for its release yet. The song is written especially for the drama series.

For those trivia lovers, Beth is born on 14th December 1970 in Norfolk, UK but she lives in London now. Although Beth is one of the tallest female singers around, she never modelled. In her freetime, she loves to shave. And she would love to work with "Mad Professor" in her next album. Also Beth uses the Martin D28, Breedlove to play her songs.

may 26 > Beth Orton on Conan O'Brien
Beth will make an appearance on Conan O'Brien on 1st June 2000.

apr 30 > Beth Orton down with Crohn's Diease
There has been several reports about Beth being sick and down with Crohn's Disease. Beth has repeatedly been plagued by this illness since she was young. And it has gotten worse whenever she overworked herself. This time, she had to cancel a few low-key Irish shows in order to recover.

Philadelphia Inqurier reported:"Beth Orton is taking two months off from touring because of a recurrence of Crohn's Disease, which attacks bowels and intestines. A year ago she ditched some shows for the same reason."

There is also a similiar report at NME.com, please refer to: http://www.nme.com/newsdesk/20000420175610.html

Let's wish Beth a speedy recovery and hopefully, she could get well soon and bring us more of those music that we all drew our strength from.

apr 04 > Rage Transcript
Beth Orton appears on a TV programme in Australia on 1 April 2000. The programme titled Rage is a video clip programme broadcast on ABC TV (Australia's national broadcaster) each week on Friday and Saturday night (starting time varies week to week) and into the early hours of the next day. The Saturday night show usually has a guest programmer who chooses the playlist and introduces some of the clips.

And Beth happens to be the guest programmer that night. The whole show usually goes for about 6 hours but the guest programmers spots are only about 2 or 3 hours long.

4 Beth videos (She Cries Your Name, Touch Me With Your Love, Central Reservation and Stolen Car) were played along with some other great ones.

Below is the transcript kindly prepared by Darren:

BO: Hello, this is Beth Orton and I'm gonna be picking my favourite videos for Rage. So tune in, don't touch that dial and don't drop out.

[Rage intro]

BO: So the first video I've picked is Fatboy Slim, "Praise You". I love this video, it makes me smile, it's got that amateur feel. And it's very funny. So here it is, "Praise You".

Praise You - Fatboy Slim
Run On - Moby
Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? - Moby

BO: So the next video I picked is Massive Attack, "Unfinished Sympathy". It's a very simple idea -- just followin' a girl walking. One shot which is something they used in films like "Mean Streets" and "Goodfellows" and stuff like that. And it's just very simple, very clever idea and a brilliant song. So here
it is, "Unfinished Sympathy".

Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack
Ghost Town - The Specials

BO: So, this is Stone Roses from Manchester, England doing "She Bangs The Drum". Mainly I picked this 'cause I really like the song, to be quite honest with you, and I can't really remember what the video's like but I'm sure it's good and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Here it goes, "She Bangs The Drum".

She Bangs The Drums - Stone Roses
My Iron Lung - Radiohead

BO: Next up is Radiohead, "Street Spirit". I love this, not only 'cause it's got trailers in it, but I just think it's amazing. It's so clever the way they all spin around and do all that sort of stuff. Anyway, here it is "Street Spirit".

Street Spirit - Radiohead
All Is Full Of Love - Bjork
As Tears Go By - Marianne Faithful

BO: Hello, this is Beth Orton and you're watching Raaage.

Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stones
Faded - Ben Harper

BO: This next video is The Chemical Brother's "Let Forever Be". A superbly done video... umm, what can you say. It's again, one idea really and very well executed and I hope you enjoy it -- "Let Forever Be".

Let Forever Be - The Chemical Brothers
Kelly Watch The Stars - Air
Devil's Haircut - Beck
Whip It - Devo
Living With A Hernia - Weird Al Yankovic

mar 30 > Beth Orton record deal ends with Arista
From today's LA Times [March 25 2000]:

Beth Orton, the British singer known for an at-times arresting combination of folk and techno, is no longer on Arista Records in the U.S. after the termination of that label's deal with U.K. label Deconstruction. Her manager, Geoff Travis, states that Orton remains under contract to BMG--parent of both Arista's (sic) and Deconstruction--for one more album and that they are exploring options for U.S. release within the BMG family, as well as looking at potential options for a full new deal.

mar 09 > Beth spoke to Billboard.com after Brit win
Below is an article taken from Billboard Online where Beth talks about her win at the Brits as well as her new materials. You can also view some of the snapshots of Beth taken at this year's Brit Awards.

No one was more surprised by her Brit Awards victory than Beth Orton. "To be honest, I was fairly oblivious to most of what was going on, but we were on the next table to [multiple award winner] Macy Gray, which was good," she says. Orton was named best British female solo artist at the Brits ceremony, which took place Friday at London's Earl's Court.

Orton spoke to Billboard Online from Milan today (March 8), where she had just arrived for a Thursday evening gig with fellow Brit Award-winner Beck. "I'm not quite with it! We've just done a 14-hour drive to get here."

Many saw Orton's success at the Brits as the surprise of the night, in a category where the nominees included Geri Halliwell and Gabrielle. Orton says she was pleased by the award, "but I hadn't been waiting for it."

Tourmate Beck was named best international male solo artist but declined to attend the event, filming an acceptance speech in Italy, where Orton says he was "on holiday." On the heels of a successful U.S. tour, the pair come to the U.K. later this month, where Beck plays Wembley Arena on March 23, supported by Orton, then continues without her to Manchester (March 24) and Glasgow (March 25). The latter two dates are already sold out.

Orton already has material written for the follow-up to her 1999 Arista/Heavenly set "Central Reservation," which peaked at No. 110 on The Billboard 200. It has sold 100,000 copies in the U.K. and 475,000 worldwide, according to the label.

"I've just got to get some time to myself and hone it all down," she says of her new songs.

mar 05 > Beth Orton wins Brit Award!
Finally Beth Orton have her dues paid on 4th March 2000, when she won the much coveted Best British Female Award at this year Brits Awards 2000. She was up against tough competition this year including ex-Spice Girls, Mel C and Geri Halliwell. But her win was truly an amazing one and as well as deserving.

The last time Beth was nominated was in 1998 with Best Bits for Best British Female as well as Best Newcomer. She lost out on both awards though.

Below is an extract from http://www.brits.co.uk

Best British Female: BETH ORTON

A surprise choice, perhaps, seeing as the Norwich folkie with impeccable modern dance connections is the only nominee not to have dented the Top Ten singles chart. In 1998 Beth was a BRITs nominee for Best British Newcomer and Best British Female. Her 1999 album 'Central Reservation' more than consolidated the promise of her 'Trailer Park' debut two years earlier, and thankfully the world and his wife are finally catching on to the delights of her introspective yet uplifting music. Charming, disarming and as cool as they come. The award was presented by Tom Jones and Robbie Williams.

feb 28 > New Song on BBC Drama
Seems that Beth has a new song on a BBC2 drama, Nature Boy. The new song is titled "Beautiful World". Neil has run a small synopsis on the story:

The story is a harrowing one of a sixteen-year-old lad in a foster home, whose life ghastly, and who finds solace in his interest in 'nature' (hence the title). He eventully runs away to trace his father. Beth's song, which is a very quiet and slow one, acts as a counterpoint to the menace and misery in the boy's life.

The show is shown on Monday between 21:00 to 22:00.

feb 03 > Brit Awards Nominations
Beth has been nominated for a Brit Award in the category of Best British Solo Female Artist. She is up against:
  1. Beverley Knight
  2. Gabrielle
  3. Geri Halliwell
  4. Melanie C

Beth was last nominated in 1998 for Best British Solo Female as well as Best Newcomer. She lost to Shola Alma for Solo Female and Sterophonics for the latter award.

jan 28 > Interview Transcript: Triple J
It's Saturday night and I'm scratching about the place for something to do after The Bill, which is what you do, if you are Australian and you have no friends LOL. So I thought I'd transcribe the interview on national radio yesterday. For those who missed it. Is that all right? This interview made me smile. She has to be the sweetest funniest person on earth!

Adam Spencer's breakfast show, January 28th 2000

Adam (A): ...we're on jjj breakfast, Adam Spencer here, joined by the amazingly talented and now de-meucused Beth Orton, you clear? your nose is clear? ready to fire?

Beth (B): yep, yep, it's good, it's all over your floor

A: we collect celebrity goober over there in the corner and I think yours will be one of the most expensive carpet squares at the end of the year, Samuel L Jackson came in acouple of years ago and really made a square very nice.

B: excellent.

A: your was more natural, it wasn't forced.

B: yeah, yeah, organic.

A: *laughs* I'd like to say I saw you at the Big Day Out, more accurately I walked around a very crowded room trying to get in and trying to poke my head in, it was packed at the BDO, you really pull in some crowds.

B: yeah.

A: you enjoy it?.

B: yeah it was great, it was tops.

A: are you pleasently surprised that that many people are packing in and enjoying it?

B: definately, always surprised.

A: where are they hearing about it?

B: where are they coming from? I don't know where they're hearing about it, it's wierd, it seems to be really word of mouth which is great.

A: what sort of a crowd is it? because we're noticing more and more with big festivals in Australia like the electronica and dance music components of your BDO is getting larger and you're also seeing more people who might be coming for your original guitar rock then going and doofing later on in the night, where does your music fit into that scheme?

B: I don't know, I mean, I've said it before, I'll say it again is that I was introduced to a lot of different songs by say Primal Scream and Tom & Ed and for example 'I wish I never saw the sunshine', Innis from the Primals, he introduced me to that song, I went home and did my own version of it you know, but it's like I think just because you enjoy a good dance and all that stuff you know, you can't, it doesn't negate you enjoying umm... some more ambient music you know, I mean, I don't know anyone who's that one dimensional.

A: now promoters and, even to an extent, record stations are starting to realise that more and more aren't they?

B: yeah.

A: it's not a matter of no, no, like, I'm into to rock mate, or I'm into punk, no, I'm into dance music.

B: it's so stupid, I mean, what do they think people are? like, I mean, it's like I'm not like that, I don't just go home and sort of plat my hair and do crochet, d'ya know what I mean? and I know Tom & Ed don't just go home and listen to banging fucking mental music all the time d'ya know?

A: *laughs* do Tom & Ed crochet?

B: oh they love to crochet.

A: fantastic, I love a major rock icon who is also good in the creative arts.

B: I like them when they're good in the kitchen.

A: absolutely, what are you like in the kitchen?

B: amazing

A: *laughs* you talk about Primal Scream being an influence and now you're kicking around the BDO with them, for people going to the BDO you bring all your school mates, and you meet mates, it's got this sort of festive side to it, is it the same for the artists?

B: it is! actually, it's funny, I was thinking it's kind of like my brother works in timber and sometimes they have these weeks away where they all have big sort of conventions, and I thought, oh, it's a bit like that really, it's like the busman's holiday, lot's of filth, it's great, it's so much fun, it's lovely seeing everyone, 'cos to be honest this is the first time I've seen anyone for ages, 'cos we're always ... off around the wooorld ... recording recooords ...

A: at the same time *laughs* are you bumping into some people and doing the sort of i've heard three of your alubms blah blah blah, never met you before, nice to meet you?

B: well, I mean, Jo Strummer hellooo! my life!

A: *laughs*

B: he's amazing yeah, so that's pretty wild, he's on the same stage as me as well.

A: do you plan in advance where you're going on the day, do you have your little map   with I'll go see that, I'll go see that, or are you I'll let the mood blow you around type?

B: I let the mood blow me from place to place.

A: where has your mood, in which directions has it blown you, so far?

B: so far? Primal Scream, I saw Primal Scream the other day and then I tried to watch Jo Strummer, but my mind had been so blown by the Primals that I just had to like take it easy, I just couldn't handle any music after that... it's like woah.

A: you had to go sit in a quiet corner after that.

B: well it's like going to see a really good film you know, it was just like wow, then I saw the Chemicals last night, then I saw Jo Strummer the night before and oh yeah, um, I saw Something about Kate [she's means Something for Kate - oz rock trio - yummy bass player] I thought they were really good.

A: we're talking to Beth Orton on jjj breakfast... here's the Deep Dish re-mix of 'central reservation'...

[song plays]

A: ... on jjj we're talking to Beth Orton... Beth, I read recently in Rolling Stone magazine when you nominated your top 10 favourite singles.

B: did I?

A: you're looking a bit nervy now.

B: yeah.

A: oh, I got it here in front of me, it happened.

B: who is it?

A: it's got here under the title "Beth Orton's record collection" - Rolling Stone magazine February 2000.

B: hello?

A: I have the documents, what I love is where you nominate ten cd's you really rate and you mention your own one, Trailer Park.

B: *realises now* oh yeah! I did *giggles* I wrote Rolling Stone here, let's have a look *reads* "what's the point in making a record you don't like?"

A: absolutely

B: exactly... my sentiments exactly... *reads on* "I don't think I could ever call songwriting a job, I felt like such a cunt" oh, I say.

A: *laughs* I was going to gloss over that.

B: I'm so rude.

A: *laughs more* you're much ruder in print than in person.

B: yeah, it's true.

A: Stone Roses are on that list, what do you think of when you think of the Stone Roses?

B: I don't know, I can't intellectualise music, I don't think of anything, I just enjoy 'em.

A: I like Dusty Springfield being on the list.

B: yeah, she's genius

A: Dusty did a lot of interpreting of other people's work, right? would you like her to sing your songs if that was a possibility?

B: what if she wasn't dead?

A: yeah, is she the sort of artist you would want?

B: yeah!

A: what is it about handing over your work to someone like dusty?

B: she's got an amazing voice and ... pff... she's just full of soul, soulful person, maybe we should send a message over to the other side?

[ the interview goes on for another minute or so... then he plays the Chemical Brothers 'out of control']

Peter Fiebig comments:

Such a sweet voice. And when she says 'it's like' in conversation, it sounds exactly like central reservation where she sings 'it's like'. She's also a regular potty mouth too :) gotta love that. I've only heard the word cunt on jjj once before in 5 years of listening! Good work!

jan 26 > Triple J Radio Show

jan 24 > Entertainment Weekly
Entertainment Weekly ranked Central Reservation as the # 8 best album in 1999.

Beth Orton (Arista) With her drawn-shades voice and penchant for doleful observations, British folkie Orton is the definition of an oldfangled, introspective, fatalistic coffeehouse troubadour.

She's such a rarity, especially in the world of record-company conglomerates, that you half expect
to find her in a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame exhibit of extinct species. Orton's second album, though, is the farthest thing from musty. Central Reservation's shifting array of backdrops--lightly flickering techno, pop-standards orchestration, jazzy cabaret, sinuous rock--caress and perk up these regret-laden songs and Orton's delivery. The year's most resplendently sad music.
