April 23 > 100 Club gig
Beth Orton will play a one-off London show on May 8, dotmusic can report.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter will perform an acoustic solo show at the capital's infamous venue, 100 Club next month.

Orton, who is likely to be premiering new material, is playing the show to draw attention to the new multi-million pound breast screening and diagnosis centre, Barts Cancer Centre of Excellence.

Tickets, priced £20, will go on sale on Saturday (April 19) morning.

Beth Orton has recently concluded her latest European tour which finished with a sell-out show at the Royal Albert Hall.

April 21 > Warchild HOPE album released

April 10 > Dotmusic special
As previously reported, Beth Orton joined The Flaming Lips as mystery guest for one of their gigs in UK. Besides performing some of Beth's most loved songs, they also did a rendition of Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head.

Courtesy of go-quick, you can now hear the song on mpga format. At 8.34MB, it can be a drag for those still on 56kps modem but it's worth a download. Pretty bad but pretty funny!

April 03 > Ooh Child
From: Richard Smith

Just thought I'd share a bit of research about the cover that Beth played at the Royal Albert Hall this week as her final encore: "Ooh Child".  She has submitted a studio version of this track to the forthcoming Warchild charity record "Hope" (Paul McCartney, Billy Bragg and Moby, amongst others, also contribute songs)

"Ooh Child" was originally done by Chicago soul group The Five Stairsteps.  All five members were actual brothers and sisters, and their somewhat odd name derives from the band's mother, Betty Burke, who remarked one day that her five musical offsprings resembled stair steps when they were lined-up next to each other according to age.

The original actually sold over a million upon its release in 1970.  Beth's version sounded fantastic at the RAH, her performance of the song in solo acoustic mode really worked well.  I'm looking forward to hearing the album version - the sales of which help support children that are victims of war.

For a change, wouldn't it be nice if there was a sudden outbreak of world peace.
